Canadian Mounties Warn of Crypto Recovery Scam Exploiting Police Branding
Fraudsters are impersonating Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers to target victims of prior cryptocurrency scams, offering bogus asset recovery services for upfront fees. The scheme preys on individuals who previously lost funds in crypto-related frauds, compounding their losses through false promises of fund retrieval.
In one documented case, a Nanaimo resident who lost $5,000 CAD in a fake remote work cryptocurrency scheme was later contacted by scammers posing as law enforcement. The fraudsters claimed to have discovered $60,000 CAD in crypto under the victim’s name—a ruse to extract additional payments under the guise of recovery fees.
Authorities emphasize the RCMP never solicits payments for investigations or partners with private recovery firms. This secondary scam tactic proves particularly damaging as it exploits victims at their most vulnerable—when seeking redress for earlier financial losses.
